Class Description

Flamenco Flamenco music, most notably the characteristic singing, began to develop in Southern Spain beginning as early as the 15th century from a combination of Gypsy, Jewish, North African, and indigenous Spanish traditions. By the late 18th century, guitar and dance had joined the singing, and the art form began to be performed at fiestas and for tourists, as described by Prosper Merimee in his famous novel Carmen. By the early 20th century, flamenco music and dance was presented in cafes cantantes or tablaos, as well as in theatres around the world. Today the music and dance continues to be passed from one generation to the next in families, and artists like Sara Baras, Paco de Lucia and Joaquin Cortes have become famous worldwide.

Flamenco dance is characterized by a proud carriage of the upper body, distinctive, sinous movements of the arms and hands, especially for women, and strong, complex footwork called taconeo. In as little as 1 hour, Dance in Madrid's teachers can show you the basics of a simple Rumba flamenca, that can be danced at parties or clubs throughout Spain. Instruction will include palmas (handclapping), hand, arm, and body movement, rhythm, and a small amount of footwork. In a few more hours, students can get a more thorough introduction to flamenco, including footwork and a short choreography.

Sevillanas Sevillanas is a folkdance with set steps, usually danced by couples of either sex. It is native to Sevilla, but is commonly danced throughout Andalucia and in clubs throughout Spain. Although Sevillanas was not originally considered to be part of the flamenco tradition, the dance has now been 'aflamencado', or influenced by flamenco dance movements and adopted by flamenco artists as their own. Sevillanas consists of 4 sections or coplas, and each requires at least an hour to learn and practice, so a minimum or 4 class hours is recommended for Sevillanas students. Sevillanas is highly recommended for anybody traveling to Andalucia during the spring or summer feria season, and is a MUST for those visiting Sevilla's Feria de Abril in April and May!
